Farmers Feeding Families

Request for Proposals

Started in 2017, Metro United Way’s Farmers Feeding Families (FFF) initiative connects local farmers and the larger agricultural community of Shelby County to opportunities that meet food insecurity needs in the county.  According to recent reports, 11.5% of the community struggled with food insecurity at the time this innovative program began.  Since the global pandemic started in 2020, Shelby County has seen that number rise to 15%, and the problem extends even further for the population under the age of 18.

Through Farmers Feeding Families, Metro United Way is able to reduce hunger and its associated health issues in our community by providing donations of produce and protein directly to local feeding programs, as well as direct financial support through periodic grant opportunities in the community. FFF is also part of Metro United Way’s strategic focus on ensuring a strong safety net of programs and services exists that address the health and basic needs of individuals and families in the community.

In this particular Request for Proposals, we seek to identify community programs and services that increase access to food and combat food insecurity in Shelby County. Our goal is to ensure that individuals are able to live healthy lives free from hunger and its associated health issues and move more freely toward self-sufficiency with this barrier removed.

This application will be open Monday, March 13 through Friday, March 31, 2023.  Available funding will be distributed to organizations whose work most closely aligns with the stated goals.  This is a one-year general operating grant and applications should be for services to be performed June 2023 through May 2024.  Organizations receiving grant funds must sign a grant agreement and agree to provide a brief report about how funds were used to Metro United Way within 30 days of the end of the grant period. Applicants will be notified via email regarding award status no later than May 5, 2023.
