For more than 10 years, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a partnership between Metro United Way, the Louisville Asset Building Coalition, and the Southern Indiana Asset Building Coalition, has helped families claim valuable tax credits they are eligible for such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
For families in our community, that means extra money to provide for their families’ needs and increasing financial stability that has benefits that ripple throughout our community.
Gail has taken advantage of the free VITA program for years and says, “They work so hard to make other peoples’ lives better.”
With the money she’s saved and received from her returns, she’s enrolled in a doctoral program and used the funds to help with books and supplies to reach her goals in college.
“America’s built on hopes and dreams and aspirations. When you can use the earned income tax credit, it helps those dreams come true,” she says.
Through partnering with 25 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, 11,000 families were able to secure $6.7 million in earned income tax credit and over $17.5 million in total tax refunds, helping families with their financial stability this past year.
