Helping Families Get Prescriptions They Need

We know that the strongest communities ensure that everyone has the resources they need to thrive and succeed, and a healthy mind and body are an essential foundation for success in school, work and life. However, an estimated 80-100 million Americans are currently uninsured or underinsured and can have challenges paying for their prescription medication. And tragically, 1 in 4 people in the United States go without taking their medicine as prescribed due to the cost of these prescription medications.

Through Metro United Way’s partnership with SingleCare (formerly FamilyWize), uninsured and underinsured individuals and families in our seven-county region saved over $1 million locally in 2016 by using free prescription cards to acquire needed prescription medications! The prescription cards, obtained physically or electronically, are available free to everyone, whether insured or uninsured. The cards are simple to get, easy to use and the savings are immediate at over 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide. For the uninsured, this can be their primary prescription benefit. For those with a health plan, it is a secondary, backup benefit for medicine that is not covered or during deductible periods. Users are guaranteed the lowest prescription prices possible on all FDA-approved drugs.

“Thanks to our partnership with FamilyWize, we are able to make a difference by providing a way for our neighbors to stay healthy,” said John Nevitt, Director, Economic Mobility at Metro United Way. “By reducing the burden of high prescription medication costs for those who are uninsured or underinsured, we are helping to build a stronger community.”

When individuals are healthier, our entire community prospers. Businesses see less absenteeism and turnover and also experience more productivity, which means success for us all.
