Black Male Achievement

Black Male Achievement - Improving Outcomes for African American Males

Black Male Achievement Initiative

Black Male Achievement can be described as a national movement to improve outcomes for ALL communities by addressing persistent opportunity gaps facing African American males.

We have a segment of young people who consistently live shorter, poorer quality lives with fewer opportunities than many of their counterparts across racial and ethnic groups. We need to continue to improve opportunities and experiences for African American males as they suffer disparities in reading proficiency, school discipline, unemployment and participation in the criminal justice system.

We must address the notion that African American males are predestined to be unsuccessful by celebrating achievement while lifting up those who struggle.

Changing the Odds

Metro United Way recognizes the need to utilize collective action and inclusive strategies to enhance the scope and success of programs and efforts to ensure black boys and young men have their basic needs met, a good education and sufficient employment opportunities.

We are committed to our goal of uncovering promising practices in our community that change the odds for African American males. We have established a Black Male Achievement Innovation Fund that will invest in early education and out-of-school time programs that deliver results for African American males. We also work to raise community awareness and support for Black Male Achievement and recruit volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to work directly with youth; black males constitute one of the smallest segments of mentors in the nation while black boys are one of the largest mentee segments.

BOOKS & BARBERSHOPS

As part of our Black Male Achievement initiative, Metro United Way is partnering with barbers in our local neighborhoods to provide reading nooks with books for our children, because early grade reading is one of the best predictors of children's success in school, work and life. With books that reflect the diversity of our community, children will find worlds they recognize and inspiration to dream of those they don't!
