A journey through divorce to financial independence

Navigating divorce takes a toll mentally and financially, but with the help of the Siemer Institute, one mom found her way through it and onto success.

Amber* was going through a contentious divorce and experiencing emotional and financial abuse. The court system referred her for assistance to help her care for herself and her children during the difficult time.

She found help in a financial stability program through Jewish Family and Career Services, which is made possible by an investment from Metro United Way and the Siemer Institute. The goal of the Siemer Institute is to prevent homelessness and promote financial stability for families.

For eight months, Amber worked with a case manager to protect her finances and the mental health of herself and her children. In that time, she finalized her divorce, bought a home, and separated her finances from her former spouse.

Amber also met with a business advisor through JFCS to discuss starting her own small business.

Metro United Way is proud to invest in services such as these to help people in our community get on track financially and not just survive, but thrive. Our community is stronger when everyone can access pathways to prosperity.

Amber is still receiving mental health counseling and other supports to help her adjust to her new life. She will have access to those supports for as long as she needs thanks to the continued support of Metro United Way.
