In just two years, a Louisville family on the brink of eviction settled into a new home and gained financial stability. It’s a story of true perseverance.
It started when Susan’s husband became ill and lost his employment. Needing emergency financial assistance to avoid eviction, the family sought help.
They found it at the Salvation Army of Louisville, in a program funded by Metro United Way and the Siemer Institute.
The family’s case manager helped them through the immediate crisis so they did not become unhoused. But that was just the beginning of this journey!
Despite her own medical condition, Susan developed her work force skills and soon found steady employment. She worked on her credit, paid down debt, and established a budget and savings – all in the hopes that one day she and her husband would own their own home.
Her children also set goals such as getting better grades in school and helping out more at home. Through the Salvation Army, Susan had access to the Angel Tree program, food distribution, and a summer camp program for the kids. Neither of her children had experienced a summer camp before and they loved it!
For two years, the family received services and saved enough money to buy their own home! With that lifelong dream realized, the family is thriving and no longer needs financial assistance.
“We are extremely proud of this family for the challenges they have been able to overcome to gain stability,” her case manager said.
Susan’s story is a testament to the power of creating pathways from poverty to prosperity – a priority for Metro United Way. Learn more about Metro United Way’s work in this area.
