Humana “Listen Up” Project

Help us provide 160 encouraging notes and headphones to Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana students!

At Metro United Way (MUW) we identify the most pressing issues in our community, and we bring together the people and organizations needed to address those issues head-on.

As Jefferson County students return to school later this year, we are looking at what it will take to make up for ground lost during the pandemic. We recognize that students only spend 20% of their lives in school and if we are to keep our students on track, it is essential that learning continues outside the classroom. To achieve this, families depend on trusted out-of-school time organizations to provide a safe environment that supplies educational, social and recreational opportunities that can further their students’ educational and social-emotional development.

Today’s learning environment also poses another challenge. Students must adjust to a hybrid online and in-person learning model that requires basic supplies to be successful — supplies that many students lack.

MUW is proud to partner with Humana to provide headphones and encouraging notes to students participating in Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana (BGCK) out-of-school programs! These headphones will allow BGCK to provide online tutoring and homework assistance to students, and these notes will help show the students that we’re rooting for them and that we have their back. That’s a message that our students need to hear, now more than ever.

We Need Your Help:

Throughout the month of April, with each encouraging “Listen Up” note you write, we will provide a headphone set to a student participating in a BGCK out-of-school time program. Our goal is to receive 160 notes and donate 160 pairs of headphones – one for each student in need.

Each note you write will be printed and affixed to the bag that will be used to distribute the headphones. Once we accomplish our goal of 160 notes – one for each headphone set – please continue to write notes! We will share all notes we receive beyond this goal with additional out-of-school time participants.

MUW is grateful for Humana’s support to meet this pressing challenge, and we thank YOU for stepping up and making it happen!

Progress towards our goal of 160 notes:

1,605 notes!

100%+

Project Instructions:

In the boxes below, write 5 unique notes to students (ages 6-18). Each student will receive a note and a pair of headphones. Be creative and have fun writing your notes – they can include your favorite inspirational quote, a word of advice, a simple joke/riddle, or kind words of encouragement (please do not include religious messaging).

Example messages:

  • Knowledge is power! Keep learning and nothing can stop you!
  • “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
  • You are a future leader, and our community is proud of you!

Thank you, Humana, for the support of this project and thank YOU for taking the time to encourage and brighten a student’s day!
