A child’s imagination flourishes when they have access to a natural, outdoor play space that is purposefully designed to allow children to be expressive while exploring their natural world. Research shows that many of the developmental skills that children must achieve – such as cognitive and social-emotional – can be most effectively learned through outdoor play.

The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to identify companies that could complete the Sankofa Sanctuary natural playground build at Chickasaw Park.

• Site details:

  • Site Location: Chickasaw Park – 1200 Southwestern Pkwy, Louisville, KY 40211 – playground site is adjacent to main parking lot (see current site photos below).
  • Construction staging adjacent to playground build in parking lot
  • Vehicle access available to site
  • No underground utilities except storm water drainage – maps can be provided upon request
  • Subterranean conditions unknown
  • Site is an open and active park, but areas can be closed off as needed (contractor responsible for providing materials)
  • No locked onsite storage available

• Company will be responsible for:

  • Site prep as needed
  • Health and safety for installation of structures
  • Commitment to working with project partners via Metro United Way as the lead contact
